The Grand Cascade, the most magnificent fountain at Peterhof, is a sequence of 37 gilded bronze
sculptures, 64 fountains and 142 water jets, descending from the terraces of the Great Palace to
the Marine Canal and the sea. The fountains are fed by underground springs of the Ropsha Hills
about 22 km away. Originally, the sculptures were cast in lead, but these weathered badly,
and were recast in bronze and gilded after 1799.
