Canyonlands National Park

Canyonlands NP is actually three separate and vastly different regions that are somewhat far apart. We concentrated on the northern region known as Islands in the Sky, close to Arches National Park. In Arches, you are mostly in the canyons looking up, whereas in Canyonlands you are mostly on the ridges looking down. The area is wedged between the Colorado and Green Rivers, both of which have carved deep canyons over 2000 feet from rim to floor. Biggest thrill was snaking up and down a single lane dirt mining road from the top to bottom in Shafer Canyon using 4 wheel drive for the first time. Mesa Arch is the iconic photo seen most often, along with the Green River Canyon. We actually camped "next door" in Dead Horse Point State Park, which has an incredible overlook of the Colorado River making a horsehoe bend in deep canyons far below the rim. Truly spectacular!
