Bruce,
You have done a great job. If you do find some time in the near future for travel to India again, I will like you to take some more pictures of different cities so that people from other countries can get a clear view of India with the contrast of culture, diferences of rich and poor, technology and religion etc.
Very good start.

Beautiful work here and sobering at the same time. I was unaware of many of the tragedies (e.g. glue sniffers) and these pictures are top notch. Continue your great work for all of those who would otherwise never know of beautiful India.

My Lord! This work has taken on a journey through a country I may never see. The journalistic ability allowed me to feel the pain and struggles in each shot. I must say that beauty of the Indian people is breathtaking and you have captured it superbly. Your eye for contrast and dept enriched each photo and sucked me right into the moment. I hope that I have a chance some day to visit India. I will review this gallery again and again for inspiration. You have an awesome talent.

Mihir 19-Jun-2005 06:43
Hi Bruce,

I am a Pune native but have been in the US for the last four years...haven't been able to make a trip home in all that time. I became interested in photography only about a year back and all I have been able to see of India is through photos on pbase or other sites. I must mention that my perspective has completely changed. I can see things about Indians which I never saw in the 24 years I lived there. To be honest, while in India I used to find beauty only in people who kept themselves well...which is a shame. But I can now really see the beauty and innocence in poor people too. The best thing I have learnt is that they are humans just like me.

Another thing I noticed is that unlike many other artists who photograph Indians, you have not unnecessarily focused on poverty. True, poverty is abundant and overwhelming, but I think India is more about what you've shown in your pictures. They are poor too, but I think most have a livelihood well enough of food, shelter and clothing.

I don't know much about photography, but your works feels truly superlative. I especially like the low light photos. Also, the infra red portraits are very sharp.

Best regards,
Mihir

Bruce,
Your photos are amazing. I have you marked as one of my favoites and I'm always excited to see any new work you have posted. There is so much emotion in every picture but I wouild love for you to write a little more about them. You have an eye to capture the raw beauty and most people wouldn't need words, but I enjoy reading about the people in your pictures and I try to get a grasp of what you were feeling at the time. Thanks for sharing your work and please keep it up.

Your portrait work is outstanding. I have a friend who has traveling around India for several months, and the combination of his writings and your photos gives great color and substance to the land and people.

Bruce,
this is among the best pbase galleries and a great body of photojournalistic work. it's a very non-judgemental, raw, yet sensitive look into this beautiful culture. i hope to see more of it at many angles and aspects.

Bruce, Honestly there are very few times that I come across a gallery of fotos where I literally go through every one, but this IS definitely one of those times. Your portrait work is simply outstanding... no nonsense fotos that speak IN VOLUMES to the heart of the viewer. And your documentary fotos are riveting. You really do a fine job of pulling me into each and every foto... telling me an incredibly rich story about life and about being human in difficult situations. To say I'm impressed would be a categorical understatement. Fantastic work AND vision! Bryan

Bruce,

I frequently view quite a bit of photography produced by friends and others and on the internet. However nothing I've looked at ever compelled me to dabble in photography as much as these portraits you shot.

Congratulations. That was an inspiring performance .

Hey Bruce
Thanks for taking time to check out my photos at
http://www.pbase.com/smallthinker/photography_for_the_blind
I was just wondering how hard is it to capture these images and what are the legalities involved? What techniques do you use when approaching people and asking them to take pictures and is there paperwork required when posting these pictures online or using for commercial purposes. I'm kind of new to photography and I have a greater interest in portraits then still-life, yet I don't want to infringe on the right so of others by snapping away without asking permission. Yet I find when I ask others to take pictures than I lose some of the candidness that adds so much more to the photo to me. Do you have any insight or suggestions for me? Please feel free to drop me a line in my guestbook or email me at TheMellowCat2000@yahoo.com. Take care and look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers,
Phil
