H u n z a - The Valley of Youth

Hunza is really a magical place that moves the soul and the Shangri-la of James Hilton's novel The Lost Horizon. In times of turmoil around the world I found beauty and tranquility in Hunza. The scenery is stunning in Karimabad and beyond towards China.

My fifth visit to Hunza, this time with my family, was after a gap of 17 years. We did a short trek to the Gulmit Glacier near Husaini, which is a small village about 90 minutes from the Chinese border on the original Silk Route.

Thanks for visiting and for your comments. Hunza is a long way from my present home in Canada, but I have this desire to keep going back there. The air is so fresh and crisp, the light is bright and the skies blue with just a few clouds. In these great mountains the sunrises and sunsets are inspiring and at night the stars seem to come down closer to you. On a moonlit night you can see the majectic Rakaposhi snow peak shine across the valley. It is a cheerful place where there is no noise of city traffic and there is the scent of flowers and fruit. Then there is the river flowing down in the ravine meandering through the Hunza valley. The people are friendly, simple and docile. Truely it is a beautiful paradise and I love it.

Hi Arif, loved your pictures. I just got through reading a journal of Wilfred Thesiger's, written & illustrated (also with great photos) in 1952 / 53 which included travels in Hunza and Chitral. Your photos brought an extra dimension, well done!

Your pictures of the Hunza are spectacular (National Geographic quality), as I remember them from the slide show at your place. This area seems indeed to exist in another dimension, a lost world and a true paradise.
