Along the Craggy Garden Trail

This trail runs along a ridge near the Visitor's Center in Craggy Gardens on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The center appears to be located in a saddle between two peaks which are covered with heath balds. The trail winds beneath ancient rhododendrons, mountain laurel and other members of the heath family. The rhododendrons are from 10 to 12 feet tall and the herbaceous level is mostly ferns and mosses. The trail leads to a grassy bald where I found a clump of huckleberry bushes that had to be 20 feet across. Huckleberry is also a member of the heath family. I didn't identify this gnarled tree at the time but I believe it's a very old and wind twisted maple.
