18th - Gold Hill

Shaftesbury, Dorset view map

Off for a bit of a drive this afternoon and ended up in Shaftesbury, which was nice - this is Gold Hill, made famous by Hovis' 1973 advert for their bread.

This is one of the most photographed streets in England - all chocolate box and cottage garden-looking, but at six o'clock on a Saturday evening it was deserted. I was lucky - the sun came out just as I got there, and makes for some deep shadows on the thatched rooves. At the bottom of the street and stretching far into the distance is the Blackmore Vale, scene of many of Thomas Hardy's novels, and some of the richest pasture & grazing land in England

All that flat ground and they chose to build on the side of a hill.
Great shot of the street showing the flat fertile land in background

I can see why it is one of the most photographed streets in England. It is so quaint and there is a gorgeous view of the vale. A beautiful place and photo. V

A not unfamiliar scene, but yours is special with this lighting and shadows and the view into the lush countryside in the distance.

any way you (or Hovis) slice it...a memorable and justifiably famous view...your comp is spot on...and Blackmore Vale so appealing...V

A classic indeed, beautifully captured. I have never visited, another one for the list.

I love your composition, including the lovely countryside in the distance puts the area in context.
