Flying to Istanbul - First views and photos

The gallery trip-report begins with Istanbul for various reasons, but the rest of this photo-report is in the chronological order we saw Turkey, starting Sept. 27, 2004 (in Ankara).

We flew to Turkey from San Francisco with a focus on getting to the fantasy land of Cappadocia, via rental car and driver-guide for the Cappadocia and SouthEast portions of this country (at one point we were only 2 miles from the Iran border). SFO airport photo shows my work-laptop working for the last time that trip. :-)

We arrived, 3-1/2 weeks later, at Istanbul after flying from Antalya and the southwestern Mediterranean area of that country with its beautiful coastal and island scenes.
These rooftop views on Oct. 21, 2004, from our Fehmi Bey Hotel in Sultanahmet were our introduction to Istanbul. (Info is added in the next subgallery.)

As tourist (and viewer) interest in Istanbul is very high, Old Constantinople/Now Istanbul starts this out-of-control trip report.

I hope that visitors check out some photos of the rest of this very varied country, as it's rich in history and beauty and with very warm, welcoming people who go out of their way to help visitors, in this case 2 American women wandering the country in a rental car. It was a great trip, and we never encountered a problem (except for road traffic in Urfa, Antalya, and Istanbul).

Right on! I am heading to Turkey in January with a group of 15 for a 21 day trip across the country. It's so nice to see beautiful pictures of the places I am going. After viewing your vid clips of the cappadocia balloon ride I am even more pumped. Thanks for a great site that has given me a prespective and advance view. Please sned any advice for the trip that you have.

The Cursed God, i just totally loved ur photos, so natural and pure. i dont think i'll ever get to go to turkey or istanbul but thx to ur photos i got a beautiful glimpse of the country.

Guest, that's a really nice compliment from someone who lives there. Thank you! Janet, while Guest is lucky to live there, it's wonderful you can go there often. I guess you meant the hotel rooftop view, since you've been to Turkey many times? Have a great birthday soon :-) That's the way to celebrate 50, for sure !

It looks a fantastic place and i am looking forward to my trip there in January 2006 for my 50th birthday i have been going to Turkey for 11 years
