Crust
The Crust of the Earth. Where the Pacific and North American Tectonic Plates meet.
This photo was taken looking into the In-Ko-Pah Gorge aka Devil’s Canyon from over 3,000 ft. / 1,000 m elevation.
The bottom of the gorge behind the mountains in the foreground is at sea level and the surface of the Salton Sea in the distance is at –226 ft / -69 meter below sea level.
The highest mountain in this area Mt. San Jacinto Peak is 10,834 feet / 3,302 m high.
These extreme elevation changes show the ruggedness of this area which is virtually uninhabited.
Even though this was taken on a hazy day, one can easily identify geographical features 40 miles / 60 km distant.
In places like this one really gets a strong feeling of the power of the earth, and one can literally see its open crust.
