Now in it's 7th year of being celebrated in Oahu on Memorial Day, the Toro Nagashi, or Lantern Floating Ceremony,
is held at Ala Moana Beach park in front of 22,000+ buddhist & non-buddhist holiday observants.
Approximately a month prior, those of us practicing the Shinnyo-en school of buddhism write up prayers
of consolation for the ancestors of family, friends, acquaintances or even strangers (Dubya?) that are
to float along with the lanterns. Non-buddhists are welcome to do so on the day of the Ceremony.
Thanks for your note! I'm happy to be able to bring those wonderful memories of the Lantern Floating Ceremony. I've also been fortunate to attend the dedication of the Chicago Temple in 2001. We are fond of Rev. Somogye here in DC and always look forward to his edification visits. DC is hoping to open a Training Center soon to serve the mid-Atlantic followers. Namaste, Rudy
