What an iconic name - Diamond Head! Never having been to Hawaii before this trip, I'd heard of Diamond Head on numerous occassions, in that sub-conscious manner that we all experience the daily overdose of extraneous news, information and minutiae that flows from our newspapers, TV, work and conversations. To me, it conjured up brave and buff surfers battling titanic tidal waves with the threat of being dashed onto treacherous volcanic rocks as reward for a wave well rode. Our reality this day, was a very sunny, hot hike up to the summit of the dormant steam volcano that is Diamond Head for a well-earned panoramic view of a goodly portion of the island of Oahu. Take a gander at these photos and perhaps you'll experience a small sensation of what it's like to hike Diamond Head on a warm, sunny late spring morning.
