100428_122831_8294 On The Waterfront, 21st Century Style (Wed 28 Apr 10)

Darling Harbour, Sydney NSW

There was hardly an abundant feast of photos from today's shoot, unfortunately. I took the 70-200 in to try to shoot some "remains of the working harbour" images via close-ups of the relatively few working boats still around. However the air was hazy and the light less than inspiring, and while I managed to rest the 70-200 on some flat surfaces for some shots a tripod would have helped. It was always a long shot since the midday sun is not the best time to be shooting; still, needs must.

And speaking of a working harbour, that's what this area once was. We're looking towards Darling Harbour which was once lined with cargo docks, with rail lines running down delivering and receiving goods for export and import. All of that activity has moved elsewhere (mainly to Port Botany) via containerisation, and the dockworkers of the 1930's and 1950's would hardly recognise this greatly gentrified area. Office buildings now stand where warehouses once did. The area along the far foreshore is King Street Wharf; it's a bit of a tourist trap, but there are some decent places to eat along the way. Try the king prawn gourmet pizza made with goat cheese at the Cargo Bar next time you're down. The thing that looks like a slinky on its side is the wire mesh roof of Sydney Wildlife World, a zoo of sorts which adjoins the Sydney Aquarium.

Don't forget to wave to the guy with the 40D on the other side of the harbour...
