James Watkinson Reserve, Pyrmont, NSW view map

In James Watkinson Reserve you'll find a number of trees which have bright red flowers, as shown here. (I've since been advised that this is a Summer Red Gum.) They seem to bloom at odd times, and some have bloomed just now following the official end of summer, though none were out during it.

I've seen instances of bees sampling the nectar of these before and I had a grand vision of getting a shot of a squadron of them buzzing busily around. Unfortunately there were only a handful today, and each one seemed to be working a single flower.

Overworked; hmm, that does have a familiar ring to it, come to think of it.

I decided to go for this shot since there's no way of knowing whether the opportunity of getting the shot that I imagined will ever arise again, and a bee in the bush is worth 6 which aren't (to mangle an aphorism).

I could look at this all night with that great burst of vibrant colour. The inclusion of the leaves and fruit puts it in context too.

I really like the mix of colours here, Alan - the eye focuses naturally on that lovely red-orange bloom, and then skirts the rest of the frame before coming back to the flower. The shallow DoF helps make the flower stand out of course, but you have some wonderful background bokeh beginning to creep in there too, and that splash of blue sky is a good touch. Nicely done all round :o)
