Corpus Christi RC Church, 189 Clark St. Buffalo, NY

Corpus Christi is a huge old east side church, that served a predominately Polish population from the late 1880's through the present day. The Franciscans had announced that they were closing the church at the end of 2003, however, at the last moment, the Pauline Fathers stepped forward and assumed control of the church, effective 1-1-04, and it currently remains open.

Corpus Christi today is going strong. The Pauline Fathers, under the paster Fr. Anzelm Chalupka, have taken over and are not giving up on Buffalo's East Side. Do stop in there some day for Mass, or just to look around. The sanctuary is open daily.

"Rebuild my church" was the message Francis received from the San Damiano crucifix. And he did. This church of Corpus Christi is beyond magnificent and has a history that is beyond any in the area and well beyone. Originally the cradle of the OFM CONV. Province, it is where the birth of the province began and the buildings and enclosure were the original novitiate. Fr. Justin Figas began the Rosary Hour here. The Church is is spectacular. While the neighborhood has declined, it is a wonderful opportunity for those who choose to take up the challenge that Francis heard : "Go rebuild my church!" It is a shame the Conventual Franciscans are going to abandon this historic place and more shameful yet that they want to vacate an area where the message of Francis to rebuild is sorely needed. Perhaps this band of followers prefers more comfortable places like Florida and Atlanta. None the less, this Church stands as a testiment to the friars of years gone by who worked tirelessly and who gave a gem to the community of WNY... it is a crying shame that it is in danger of closing. Future generations will not have the beauty of such houses of prayer and will surely lose confidence in those dressed in the habit of a saint who never would have left a declining neighborhood.

looks like a gorgeous theater. I went to a church in san franciso st. boniface that had very similiar paintings behind the altar. it was german orig, and they had a music box opera theater in the basement. denise
