Delaware Avenue Baptist Church, 965 Delaware Ave. Buffalo, NY

Built in 1894-95, this gigantic edifice is one of those that is easy to miss, as it is located in an area of significant architectural examples. But it would be a shame to miss as it is striking in many aspects. The unusual interior design, the intact woodwork, the auxillary areas, are but a few of the many surprises.

Remember this church very well. In 1950 I graduated from Public School #16 which was also located on Delaware Ave. approx. 5 or 6 addresses South of this church. Our class graduation ceremonies were held in this church.

I was organist here from 1973 to 1985. The organ, visible front and center, is by the noted New England firm of Johnson & Son and is from 1895. The playing action was converted from mechanical to electric in 1951 and the original two bellows are gone (actually, one still exists, but is unused), but the pipes and windchests are completely original. I have fond memories of playing it for so long. Also, this is the only Baptist church I've ever seen with angels stenciled on the inside of the dome!
