Summer 93 James Mason

Kurt Schork, Reuters

Press center, Nova Bila

I met Kurt in Jajce. We had driven in at night with lights out but the cars still got hit by Chetniks firing at the sound of the engines. Kurt was there when we arrived. He pretty much lived in Sarajevo during the seige. Here he tries out the new satellite telex Reuters has sent him in the garden at the UN press center in Nova Bila, Bosnia. Kurt was killed in an ambush in Sierra Leone in 1999.

I worked with Kurt years ago, in Massachusetts. We had more in common than I realized at the time. Later, when he became a journalist, I'd sometimes hear his voice on my car radio while I was on Route 3 or 128 -- and he was somewhere on the other side of the world, perhaps here. Yesterday I was cleaning out my file cabinet, one more time, and found an article about him by Charles Radin that I had downloaded from the Boston Globe. Which then motivated me to do some looking on the web. (And put Radin's article back in its folder.) Such a small world. Thanks for posting.

I really like this one. As a journalist myself, I recognise the intensity that you dispay when reporting on a dramatic event. Thanks for sharing.

Best regards,
