Zagreb's Globus was a weekly paper which covered the war and other issues with a flair that went way beyond the mainstream Croatian media. Denis, the boss, is seated in the center. He motivated me to get out there and cover the war, for which I'm greatful.
I took a trip to Vukovar for Globus just after the town fell to the Chetniks, and when I returned to Zagreb I told Denis I'd write a story in English and they could translate it. He said "no way. We don't have time for that. You write it in Croatian and we'll clean it up." My brutally simple Croatian turned out really good, sort of like Hemmingway after a 10 week course in the language. They ran it with no editing. It's one of my favorite clips in the portfolio.
