Surfboard wax provides traction.

Gives a sticky, bumpy surface for the soles of your feet to adhere to. A surfboard is basically a piece of foam encased in fiberglass. Imagine standing barefoot on the hood of a Corvette as it is driven downhill at 30 miles an hour. That would be the rough equivalent of riding down the face of a 'big' wave. The waves I ride would probably equate better to standing barefoot on the hood of a Corvette as it tools around a quaint school-zone, but you get the picture.
