20041002 / Great White

She's been alive in captivity at the Monterey Bay Aquarium for 17 days as of today - the longest any great white shark has ever been kept alive in captivity.

You know, i surely don't wish to bump into this when diving. Although some divers love to see sharks, not me, i would rather not take the risk, so that i can live to take another picture :)

I have to admit I nearly always come to see this when I view your galleries, sometimes from the thumb, sometimes in full. Either way - it's still iconic! You could sell this one quite easily Chris, I'm sure.

Nice pic. By when are they going to let him go?

Nicely done - elegant and dangerous!

Terrifying the way she emerges silently out of the inky black.

I suppose I should have said she is thriving in captivity rather than surviving. She was rescued as part of by-catch in a commercial fishing net and has adapted well to life in captivity. The aquarium is taking advantage of the opportunity to study an endangered animal that we know very little about in order to benefit the species. They've made it pretty clear that the animal will be released if she shows signs of stress or discontent.

That is sad, but very nice image

that's almost depressing. Nice shot, though. :)
