Mr Fenton was probably given a shilling by his mother in order that he wouldn't have to be in the front stalls but he no doubt spent the rest of the money in the fish & chip shop across the road - shame on you Mr Fenton. those who went to the cinema in those days will recall having to put up with the thick haze of cigarette smoke - I'm convinced that my growth was stunted by my regular attendance.

It was four old pennies to get into the front stalls. Then there was a vicious price increase to seven old pennies !!!

Bute had four cinemas in the past, that shown above was the Ritz, and is the only remaining structure after the Regal was razed to make way for flats a few years ago.

The others can be found here:- butewiki.secretscotland.org.uk/index.php/Category/Cinemas

I've talked to older folk (like REALLY older folk) who remember three cinemas in the town with queues round the block. That was the Rio, wasn't it? Not that I'm too young to remember, just I wasn't around at the time.
