13th April

a few 'Micro' cars were on the island today,
shame the weather wasn't nicer for them...

In the early 60s a school friend from the Academy class of 1943 advised that he was arriving on the 18.50 boat driving something " low, red and Foreign". Was it a Ferrari or a Maserati we wondered. Consternation in the ranks of those of us that were in the business of providing holiday romance. When he arrived it was in a Messerschmitt KR200 with three wheels which provoked hoots of derision as he drove off the ferry. The passenger sat in tandem behind the driver and we maintained it was constructed from old cockpits left over from from the Luftwaffe. It had no pulling power in more ways in one. It was no competition against a run in round the island in my red Austin-Healy with the hood down!

I remember seeing these little cars on the Island years ago. I also remember when working at Ardmaleish Boatyard, a guy driving up in his car and asking if he could use our slipway. He was driving one of these Amphicars that were out in the sixties, we were kinda awe-struck watching him drive into the water and away out to sea.
Never seen one since(or him), guess they are all gone now.

My parent's first car was a bubble car and I can just remember it.
Brings back memories Zak.

Well, they'll soon be in great demand and worth a fortune, as the price of fuel goes only in one direction.

I'm still trying to work out which end is the front!

Ah but the beauty of it is....If you hit something in it, no need for a coffin.
Just get buried in it. Save the fire brigade a lot of hassle too of having to cut you out of it.
I know, I'm practical LOL.

Sadly I remember when most of these weren't 'classics'

I remember these funny front-door cars. They all seemed to be called Messerschmidt or Heinkel which in not-very-post-war Britain didn't go down too well. They weren't very cool even when "cool" meant chilly. But they're clearly much-loved. Like you say, shame about the weather.
