The squat, hilltop castle of Echizen Ōno was originally built by daimyō Kanamori Nagachika in 1575. From only about a decade later, in 1586, when Kanamori moved to the Hida region of modern Gifu-ken (after destroying the Anegakoji clan there), the castle spent the rest of its history under the control of various other daimyō (largely due to war and other political interference from the Edo shogunate). Like with many other castles across Japan, Echizen Ōno-jō was torn down following the Meiji Restoration. The current reconstruction dates from 1968. Confusingly, the castle has sometimes been known as Kameyama-jō (sharing even the same kanji as similarly named castles in Kyōto and Mie prefectures).
