The royal residence of the Ryūkyū kings, Shuri castle was comprehensively destroyed by Allied bombing in World War II. The present design is a painstakingly-authentic reconstruction dating from the early 1990s, made entirely of original materials (rather than the usual ferro-concrete typical of most Japanese reconstructed castles).
