Built beside Lake Biwa by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1574, Nagahama-jō only lasted some 40 years before being dissembled by Tokugawa Ieyasu (its materials went on to be used in Hikone-jō's construction). The current reconstruction was finished in 1983, resulting in an attractive exterior shell and a hopelessly bland, modern interior.
