Akita 秋田

Formerly a castle town in Kubota Domain, Akita has historically been one of Tōhoku's most important cities. The last Japanese city to be bombed in World War II (August 14th, 1945, just hours before Tokyo's surrender), Akita is now a modern city and a center of Japan's limited domestic oil industry. One of the few large ports along the coasts of Northern Honshu, it also hosts one of the region's "Big Three" festivals: the Kantō Matsuri.
