Order CICONIIFORMES

Herons
A large, worldwide family of long-legged wading birds. Herons have long necks and long straight, spear-like bills used for striking at fish, small vertebrates, and invertebrate prey. Several species exhibit long, fine erectile plumes during the breeding season. Nests are generally large twig platforms built on trees. (John Mackinnon, The Birds of Borneo, Sumatra, Java, and Bali, 2006)

Egrets
Egrets are the graceful, white birds of wet ricefields, muddy river banks, and shallow swamps. Most of the true Egrets are pure white, and they are not always easy to identify. (Derek Holmes & Steven Nash, The Birds of Sumatra and Kalimantan, 1990)

Bitterns
The bitterns are secretive birds of fresh-water reed-beds and swamp scrub, and are most often seen when they make short flights above the reed-beds, usually at dawn or dusk. (Derek Holmes & Steven Nash, The Birds of Sumatra and Kalimantan, 1990)

Storks
About 19 species of tall, predominantly black and white birds of fresh water and coasts. Storks differ extremely from herons chiefly in their larger size and much more massive bills. they are poorly represented in Borneo, where two species occur. (Smythies, The Birds of Borneo, 1999)
