I recall back in the 70's when it was fashionable for my High School / College athletic peers, and others, to rationalize their drinking with the words "well, Frank Shorter drank x amount of beer the night before winning the gold in Munich".
Few things sadden me more than observing the self destruction of my generation and their failure to reach the potential that was in them. We were given the Space Shuttle and are leaving behind balloons filled with fraud.
Now I have to explain to my 7 year old daughter why NIKE still sells "Pre" Special Edition shoes, has their logo on the sleeve of "enhanced" NFL felons - and yet caste off Lance Armstrong after the later manifested far more hope within humanity than PRE or the NFL ever did.
FRANKly, friends don't let friends drive drunk - or buy shoes from Corporatists who immortalize ~some athletes who make bad decisions, whilst abandoning others when they become an inconvenient reflection of the collective's systemic corruption.
From what I've read, heard, and seen of Steve Prefontaine's legacy, I find it hard to believe he would've quietly tolerated such hypocritical nonsense; especially the commercial association of his name with those who make their fortune upon the sweat of others -- others on the fields, tracks, and trails, and others whose exploitation in Chinese Communist factories is facilitated by NIKE via inequitable and amoral commerce.
