January 2 - Wilson Creek area

Cindy and I headed to Harry's house in Lake Toxaway for a New Year's Eve get together and our traditional new waterfall on New Year's Day hike. The hikes have been with at least Bernie, Harry and I, but have also included other folks that have joined us over the past 5 years. Bernie has been the one to come up with waterfalls I haven't seen, but for this year he suggested taking the group to a waterfall he introduced to me a few years back, but made me promise not to disclose the location. He now says the time is right to share the info with everyone and thought the hike would be a good way to spread the word. I thought it was a great idea, but unfortunately it rained all day on New Year's Day and we didn't go anywhere - except back to my house. Sorry 'bout that, but maybe we'll do it next week end.

But all was not lost. Sunday was a better day and Cindy and I had the itch to get out. So to kind of keep the tradition going - only a day late - I picked a waterfall in Kevin Adams book that neither of us had been to - a waterfall on Phillips Branch in the Wilson Creek area. We came in from Brown Mountain Beach Rd north of Morganton and turned on SR1328 which is the dirt road that runs through the Wilson Creek Gorge. We passed on any shots of the creek through the gorge, but spotted a little fog on the creek in a flatter area farther up.
