Snowmobile

Cold Bay Air Force Station, AK

Out on the surface of Applegate Cove, I was first to give the snowmobile a try. Without thinking that it might not be safe, I turned from shore and traveled away from land as fast as I could go. The wind and snow were blowing so hard in my face that I couldn't see well. When I realized that I had no idea where the ice met open water, I started to worry that I might plunge into deep water. Then, I wondered if it would be safe to stop! I decided not to take the risk of breaking through the ice by stopping. So, I turned and headed back to shore at full speed. Luckily, I safely made it back to the shoreline. That was plenty exciting, but it was not the end of my thrills that day.
Before going back to the radar site, I drove the snowmobile on the road that led to town. I took it up to sixty miles per hour before thinking that I wouldn't even drive one of our trucks that fast on that road. We rarely exceeded thirty-five miles per hour in our wheeled vehicles. All in all, it was a fun day on the snow.
