Prairie Star DSCN1189.jpg

Buckskin Area, 6000' above sea level

Saxifrage family. More common names: Bulbiferous Fringecup, Bulbiferous Prairiestar; Lithophragma bulbifera Rydb.
-- Karl Holte

This is one of my favorites, too; it is one (we have two species that are common here) in the Lithophragma genus (Woodland Star, Prairie Star are a couple of the common names; Fringecup is another). The overall plant and the stems and leaves help make the determination; I suspect because of the maroon appearance of the stem and the fact that we are on the early side of the season that this is Bulbiferous (or Bulblet) Fringecup / Bulbiferous Prairie Star -- Lithophragma bulbifera Rydb. [and one website says "Evidently the USDA has renamed this species to Lithophragma glabrum."]
