After the mechanical tinkerings of yesterday, time to try the VW out in anger. Foot hard on the gas, engine banging off the rev-limiter, 1st gear and jump off the clutch* as quick as possible. The tyres shreek and there's a thump in the back as the car launches forwards. Revs climb quickly to 6000rpm, stab the clutch, pull the shifter into second, then third, then forth and cross the1/4 mile line 13 seconds later at 110mph.

Yeah I wish... a still respectable low 16 is nearer the mark with the current engine. Actually this all took place in the garage! A VW footwell is a very small place to set up a photograph. One light clamped to the steering column, another in the passenger footwell, camera balanced on my knee! Not sure it was worth the effort!
