Mar 7: Billingham

I read in ‘The Sunday Morning Photographer’ over at photo.net about Dorothea Lange’s 1936 photograph ‘Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California’. A photograph that puts my pretty little studio shots into perspective. It’s a reminder of how powerful the camera can be. If you haven’t seen the picture, please look it up.

Here I am with a nice camera (several nice cameras, actually) taking still life shots on the dining room table. I also have this wonderful Billingham bag, which after 9 months of ownership, still looks far too new. So this is a reminder to self. Get out more and take some real pictures!

"Real photographs" are not so much about going to extraodinary places to take ordinary pictures, but rather making extraordinary images of the ordinary around us. Which is to say that our best images will often be made in our own backyard, figuratively speaking, but sometimes quite literally. Indeed, of all the images I've made this year for Photo A Day, 89% of them were made with the camera in a radius of 30 feet.

As your image here, it's quite fine -- as good as anything made by traveling far distances.
