I am wondering if Lydia has ever seen how these little guys act when given something. It is easy to assume that they are just living off hand outs. But they are not as shallow as us humans. You can see in this picture his cheeks are all puffed out. They fill up and then run off to stash the handouts. I bet he has a pretty good stash for the winter.

No, he won't survive the winter -- since the animals are now conditioned to depend on misguided visitors for their handouts, instead of feeding for themselves -- they likely won't make it once hikers stop arriving for the season.
