01001 175-05 Henry 9-21-79.jpg

Henry Geldzahler was my 'sort of brother in law' for more than a decade due to his relationship with my brother Chris. David Hockney painted a giant dual-portrait of them which is quite well-known [See the link contained in the first added comment below]. It was part of an exhibit at the LA County museum and it was very strange for us to find ourselves viewing it as a museum guide brought her charges through and explained that though representational the painting was really quite stylized. No one could actually be as stiff and formal as Mr. Hockney's portrayal of Mr. Scott, she said. Littlejohn and I had to restrain ourselves from raising our hands and shouting out:"WRONG!!"
( Rather like when Lucy and Ethel take a bus tour of moviestar homes and Lucy informs the passengers that "...my husband Ricky is having lunch with Richard Widmark at this very moment!" The bus driver rolls his eyes and replies in his best Brooklynese:"I'll have to remember to tell Lana when I get home...")
I must admit that I always got along better with Henry than I ever did with my brother....(though Chris did loosen up quite a bit in his later years...)

There's a documentary film called "Who Gets to Call it Art" about Henry and his place in the New York art world in the sixties. It's played some major cities this Winter/Spring but never made it to this neck of the woods, so I guess Ill have to wait for the DVD release in May:
