This is an unrestored mill building. The construction is a little difficult to see but the mills were generally housed two to a building, and the buildings spaced some distance apart to minimise the risk of an explosion in one building setting off domino explosions in adjacent buildings. The buildings themselves were constructed with three thick stone walls, with the fourth open or wooden side facing the river to divert explosions over the river and away from the rest of the site and other employees. Because of this construction feature employees that were killed in explosions were said to have "crossed the river".
