This photo is really, really awesome because I think you're capturing some bizarre phenomenon. Theoretically, you shouldn't be able to see 60 miles away due to the curve of the Earth and your height. Even on a 200ft sand hill, your horizon should be 20 miles or so. But, I have heard that people in Michigan can sometimes see Chicago from the beach, which is just crazy.

Beautiful Photo! I was in Chicago this weekend and went to the Signature Lounge atop the John Hancock Center and could not see Michigan although there was a slight haze in the air. I should have some of my Chicago photos posted by the end of the week.

yeah looking back there is no way its 100 miles... I definitely over exaggerated that figure... however 52 miles seems more of a logical estimation... great photograph... I love finding photos of the Chicago skyline from extreme distances... this one is still may favorite...

I just purchased a new camera. I now have the Canon Rebel XT and also a 70-300 zoom, so I should be able to get a better image of downtown.
I know what you mean about the clear air. The best time is right after a storm or in winter. Summers convection do goof things up.

Though, it is a lot clearer than it was years ago. I can remember when I was a kid you would almost always see a haize in the air.

Sorry to burst Rob's bubble but downtown Chicago is about 52 miles (not 100 miles) from Warren Dunes, MI. However, it is still an incrediable photo though. Lake Michigan usually obscures views like this one due to heat convection off the surface or plain old smog/fog. I can make out the Sears Tower very easily and probably the Aon Bldg. and/or John Hancock, too. I know for a fact that from a 100 story skyscraper observatory in downtown Chicago, on a really clear day which is rare these days, one can view the shoreline of Michigan directly east across the lake until it disappears over the horizon to your left. This is a very excellent photo. I really enjoyed it.

It is a increidble view of chicago skyline. Thanks for showing that its skyline has the potential to be seem from this distant, oh, wait till 2009, it will has more lines sticking out of its skyline, like the trump, waterview, Fordham Spire(2000ft) and more...in this beautiful horizon shot across lake michigan! Thanks again!

this a beautiful image... I never thought it was possible to see the chicago skyline across lake michigan... but I am glad that I was proved wrong because its a great view of over 100 miles across the lake to see the skyline... all of your pictures are nice... this one is my favorite...
