Green Lynx Spider and hatchlings (Peucetia viridans)

Austin, Texas

I spotted this lady at work a couple of weeks prior to this photo being taken. She had a large white object in her mouth - it took me a couple of seconds to realize it was an egg sac. I thought the babies were appropriately colored for the Halloween season - bright orange or yellow bodies and black legs.

I took these photos and went back to the car to get some things. When I got back, mama was snacking on a ladybug. This put her in a much better position to be photographed, but unfortunately, by the time I got the camera back out, she had finished and gone back to her previous position to guard the nest.

A week or two later most of the babies had moved off or been eaten and the remaining ones had started to turn green like their mom. I noticed mama spider looked awfully thin by that time and wondered if she was ill when I noticed another egg sac in her mouth. They certainly are prolific little monsters. It's probably a good thing the hatchlings go after each other or we'd be drowning in spiders.
