Olympic medals

British Museum ~ London, England
This image is in honor of the Olympic games taking place! :)

These medals were lent to the British Museum by Rio Tinto and the Royal Mint

Copper ore, gold dust and silver & copper shavings
USA, 2011
Most of the metal for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games medals came from Rio Tinto's Kennecott Utah Copper mine in Salt Lake City in the United States, the source also of the ore exhibited here.
Almost eight million tonnes of ore were needed to produce the 4,700 gold, silver and bronze medals required.
The metal shavings displayed here are the result of Rio Tinto's concentrating, smelting and refining processes.
