Paid | $10 | History / Provenance | Purchased on eBay from seller in Pennsylvania. Seller had no history, it was purchased at a flea market. There is a mark on the bottom that looks like a roman-numeral "VIII" (except the I's are smaller than the V). It is made from micaceous clay with red stone-polished slip on the outside, and then wood fired. It pings a bit when struck so the firing temperature was high. It is clearly intended as a functional casserole dish and is almost certainly oven/food safe. I think this is Mexican rather than Pueblo, but I'm not sure. The fact that it is micaceous clay may argue for Taos, Picturis or even Jicarilla Apache. It was cool looking and for $10 I figured I could not go wrong. If someone sees this and knows where it was made please let me know. |
