... although the major religion in South Vietnam was Buddhism, there was/is nevertheless a very large segment of the populations which was Catholic (given the French colonial influence) ... thus the Christmas ornaments.

and, the failure of the old government is: the Governors are Catholics, and they ruled as if everyone in South Vietnam is Catholic

In fact, Christmas has always been enjoyed by every Vietnamese, Catholics and non-Catholics.
