Curlew

Skomer Island

Numenius arquata
AKA: Eurasian curlew
The curlew is the largest European wading bird, instantly recognisable on winter estuaries or summer moors with its long down-curved bill, brown upperparts and long legs. There have been worrying breeding declines in many areas largely due to loss of habitat through agricultural intensification. It is included on the Amber List as a bird with important breeding and wintering populations in the UK. (Info from rspb.org.uk)

There are Curlews every day, over 100 of them along with Oyster Catchers in the Stuart’s Melville rugby playing fields in Edinburgh, they have been there every sunny day I have passed. Never seen so many! So beautiful!

I believe there is a single curlew following and feeding with a flock of oyster catchers at the beach areas along the front of Port Glasgow on the Clyde.
I have observed this on a number of occasions over the last few weeks.

I have just seen a brown bird, bigger than a blackbird, brown all over but a reddish, rusty neck/chest. Any ideas?

when I lived in england as a boy I loved hearing their wonderful warbling if one can call it that ? it was a most unusual song as they sort of hung in the air whilst emitting this musical call one I shall never forget in my lifetime they are truly wonderful birds and deserve protection.
