Wren

Slimbridge, Gloucs

Troglodytes troglodytes
AKA: Winter wren (N America)
The wren is a tiny brown bird, although it is heavier, less slim, than the even smaller goldcrest. It is dumpy, almost rounded, with a fine bill, quite long legs and toes, very short round wings and a short, narrow tail which is sometimes cocked up vertically. For such a small bird it has a remarkably loud voice. It is the commonest UK breeding bird, although it suffers declines during prolonged, severely cold winters.

Hi everyone, I saw a bird today but didn't know what it was. I heard a loud call believing it to be a chick in a nest but it turned out it was a dark brown bird a little bit bigger than a blackbird, with striking light eyes. It had a squarish shaped head and an upright, erect tail. I looked in all my bird field guides and even on the RSPB site to no avail. Does anybody know what it is?

A small bird suddenly landed on my bedroom windowsill a week ago in April; it wasn't a finch, not plump and fluffy as a blue tit but sleek with brown feathers and bright mid blue streaks along its closed wings and medium to small tail. I haven't seen a photo in any of the RSPB or related website. Can anyone identify this lovely bird ?

Love these really clear photos. I saw a little sparrow sized bird yesterday that I could not identify. It had orange bars over its eyes and had a darting flight pattern. I don't see it here but will post later when I find out what it was

Hi there,
I have recently purchased a new bridge camera and have enjoyed taking shots of our beautiful birds. I got a shot of one and can not define whether it is a dunnock or a wren, how can I tell the difference.

I saw a bird feeding in a friends garden nr the river yesterday in Cambs and did not recognise it. It was a single bird and had a black head, white collar and a black 'bib'. It's back was a tawny brown with black stripy markings. What ever could it be?

My mystery bird is a fieldfare - member of the thrush family and very attractive. we have had several during this snowy weather eating the berries. Dottie.

What beautiful photographs.
We have had an entertaining day with family and friends trying to identify a bird in our London suburban garden. From your records it looks like a Redpoll. Wow!Even better than a win against Scotland in the Rugby....well, almost.
I look forward to the next strange visitor to the garden.
Thank you,
Libby, Woodfood Green.

Can anyone identify a flock of birds seen in my garden? They were about the size of a thrush but with a bright red crests on their head. They may have had red under their wings too. They had a very melodious trill. Thanks

Well impressed with the photographs. It was nice to have all the camera information listed ie. camera type, lens used, shutter speed, film speed etc.. Keep up the excellent work maybe with more British birds of prey? Absolutely loved it.

This is a wonderful site for British birds and I'm delighted to have found it - Thanks!
It would have been even better if you could have added their songs!

Hi
I have really enjoyed looking at your photographs. Being a novice it really made a difference to see who is actually coming to visit in my garden . The birds give so much enjoyment with all their little different characters. I really only get the weekend to watch them but now at least I know which is which - many many thanks
