Carduelis carduelis
AKA: European goldfinch
A highly coloured finch with a bright red face and yellow wing patch. Sociable, often breeding in loose colonies, they have a delightful liquid twittering song and call. Their long fine beaks allow them to extract otherwise inaccessible seeds from thistles and teasels. Increasingly they are visiting birdtables and feeders. In winter many UK goldfinches migrate as far south as Spain.

Torrential rain today BUT 16 goldfinches trying to feed on 2 feeding stations!!!!! What a huge amount of fluttering about! Seem to mostly juveniles...... squabbling and pushing!!

I believe I saw two of these in my garden on 18th June. I live in north Sheffield

Like many before, have at least a dozen feeding on sunflower seeds. Filled the feeder up with worms today, a change for them. What a beautiful sight to see.

Today for the first time this beautiful bird turned up in our garden in Fife, Scotland. He sat below our window plucking into the dandelion pod and giving us time to take a fantastic photo.

during the cold weather we have about 8 goldfinches feeding on sunflower hearts! Last week there were 15 all trying to feed at the same time!!!! Breathtaking!

I live in the middle of a town on the outskirts of Leeds and have always had bird feeders up in my garden, I have been off work for six weeks due to a broken foot and have loved watching the blue tits, house sparrows, starlings and blackbirds. on Sunday i managed to catch sight of a stunning pair of Goldfinches.
