Cicadas are coming, cicadas are coming!!!!

Willowbrook, IL

Our neighbors are covering their trees in the yard. According to the historical records,
the cicadas are coming next Tuesday. I will update new pictures on this site in the next a few weeks .

Every 17 years, the cicadas (Magicicada, or seventeen-year locust) come out from the ground and cover the ground and plants.

Adult cicadas live only for a few weeks. Their short life has one sole purpose: reproduction. After mating,
the male weakens and dies. The female lives a little longer in order to lay eggs. Shortly afterwards,
the female also dies. After about six to ten weeks, the eggs hatch and the newborn cicadas drop to the ground,
where they burrow and begin another 17-year cycle.

They haven't been too bad around here in the recent past. But they can be quite destructive.
