Opal and Reflection

My dog with reflection at the beach.
She is a rescue dog from Lightning Ridge,
far northern NSW, famous for its opal mines.
Naturally, her name is Opal.

Dear Terry, I have always been fascinated by opals. I remember seeing specimens in the Glasgow Art Gallery as a child. Then coming to Australia, they are prized. I love Lightning Ridge where the opals are mined. My dog, was tied in a bag and the whole litter was thrown into the bush. She was the last one to get a home. She is a wonderful, protective dog. When I got her, her name was Freckles, but my sone said he was not going to call 'freckles in a park, hence I named her Opal.

Just beautiful, Elaine. Your mention of Lightening Ridge and opals, brought memories to me. my father was a mineral dealer in San Diego, California from about 1957 to 1954. We sold many specimens and polished gems from this locality. I remember, particularly the prize being 'black opal.' Now generally only sold as a 'doublet' i.e. a thin flake of black opal bonded to an agate backing and in the shape of a cabochon. In any case, thanks for the fond memories.
