Taken from the Slave Balcony, the beautiful sanctuary of Immanuel, La Grange, Tennessee.
Built in 1832, by slave labor and using materiel on site, including hand-made bricks, this church is one of the two in existence in the US with the old balcony. The inside slaves were allowed to attend Christian services.
Regardless of our 21st Century sensibilities, slavery was a way of life in this country for almost 100 years after its founding. Fortunately, this ended in 1863.
