Varied Thrush, male, 12-Jan-2020

Back yard fountain, Stanford campus

Only the third Varied Thrush I've seen in our yard in twenty years.

This bird made a very brief appearance, in shade and the fading light of a cloudy late winter afternoon, conditions under which I obtained only this severely blurred image. Before I could do better, the bird was chased off by an American Robin, an event captured in this picture showing the robin and the thrush vanishing in a cloud: https://pbase.com/tgrey/image/170307372 .
