Note the "frosty" look of the breast feathers, with conspicuous white fringes against the orange-red background, a feature distinguishing Long-billed from Short-billed Dowitchers; Short-billed have mostly buff to orange fringes, which as a result are not nearly so visible. The fringes are only visible in spring, as they soon wear off.
