Red-necked Phalarope, male (?) spring breeding plumage

Radio Road, Redwood Shores

The brownish base to the upperpart feathers, and the neck-streak extending all the way to the eye are both good features for a male, but the reddish chestnut of that streak is very bright, more consistent with a female -- which leaves this a close call on sex.
