The birds with wings up all show white underwing lesser coverts standing out, where Short-billed Dowitchers would usually have barred feathers blending in with the gray underwing plumage. Sibley's drawings illustrate this difference, and it's described and illustrated with photographs in O'Brien, Crossley, and Karlson, The Shorebird Guide, p. 206.
