Long-billed Dowitcher, breeding plumage

Adobe Creek, Shoreline Park

Note the solid red underparts, characteristic of Long-billed Dowitcher. Few dark marks are left on underparts, as is common with Long-billed in fall; their dark marks are on the edge of the feathers, thus more easily worn off than those of Short-billed, which are in the center of their feathers. This bird shows the flexible bill tip, which allows dowitchers to capture prey when probing without having to open the whole bill.
